구글 화성을 알린 Garett Rogers

Garett Rogers은 ZDNET에서 구글에 대한 블로그를 책임지는 컬럼리스트로 많은 구글에 관련된 소식을 가장 빠르게 보도하는 분으로 유명합니다. Garett Rogers는 CNAME으로 구글 화성의 존재를 알아내고 ZDNET에 소개했습니다. 그 내용을 알려드립니다.

Garett Rogers는 다음과 같이 구글 화성을 발견하게 된 과정을 소개했습니다.

Tonight I noticed that mars.google.com now has a CNAME record that points to www.google.com. This usually means that something is about to happen with that subdomain — with the exception of calendar.google.com of course. So I started digging and you will never guess what I found — a Google Maps type application that lets you view Mars. This service is called “Google Mars”.

Garett Rogers가 구글 화성의 힌트를 얻은 것이 바로 CNAME 레코드라는 것입니다. 이 것은 도메인 주소를 IP 주소로 연결해주는 네임서버에 사용되는 용어로 Garett Rogers는 mars.google.com이 www.google.com으로 이동하는 것으로 힌트를 얻은 것입니다.(참 대단합니다.)

지금은 구글랩에 구글 화성의 업데이트를 알려왔습니다.

구글 화성의 정식 서비스명은 “Google Mars”이며 URL은 http://mars.google.com 입니다. 화성은 지구와 달(moon.google.com)에 이은 구글이 서비스하는 세번째 행성이 됩니다.

구글 어스에서 지도모드와 위성사진 모드, 그리고 하이버네이션 모드를 지원하는 것과 마찬가지로 구글 화성에서도 고도(Elevation), 육안(Visible) 그리고 적외선(infrared) 사진을 제공합니다.

이 세가지 사진은 나사에서 제공했다고 하며, 아리조나 주립대의 JMARS 프로젝트 웹사이트에서 더 많은 사진을 볼 수 있다고 도움말에서 알려왔습니다.

구글문과는 틀리게 구글 화성은 재미있는 장난으로만 치부할 수는 없을 것 같네요. 구글이 예전에 인수한 키홀이라는 회사가 화성의 사진서비스를 시작한다고 하고, 구글은 2005년 7월 아래와 같은 도메인을 구입했다고 합니다.
